Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer
Errol is a geologist, registered with the South African Council of Natural Scientific Professionals, a Recognised Overseas Professional Organisation for JORC purposes. Errol has more than 24 years of industry experience across all aspects of exploration, mine development and operation, with a key focus on gold and base metals. Errol has a wealth of public and private company corporate experience and has been on the founding teams and managed a number of exploration and mining companies throughout Africa and has had strong exposure to Australian projects. Errol has held positions in Anglogold, Cluff Mining, Metallon Gold, Clarity Minerals and LionGold Corporation. In his role at LionGold, Errol was responsible for project acquisition and growth of the company, which saw it become the first gold mining company to be listed on the main board of the Singapore Stock Exchange.
Chief Operating Officer
Walter is a mining engineer with a B.Eng (Mining Engineering) and a Masters in Engineering (Rock Mechanics) from Curtin University as well as a LLB (Law) from Macquarie University in Australia. Walter spent 12 years in the Australasian mining industry with Henry Walter Eltin, Western Mining and Gold Fields. Walter moved to South Africa in 2007 where he has held technical and corporate roles with Gold Fields, ERG and Taurus Gold on exploration projects, mine development and mining operations throughout Africa
Chief Financial Officer and Company Secretary
Martin is an FCPA with over 20 years’ resources industry experience in exploration, mine development and operation and was Chief Financial Officer, Business Development Manager and Company Secretary of Perseverance Corporation Limited. Martin was a key member of the team that evaluated the sulphide mineralisation at the Fosterville Gold Mine; an initiative that led to the discovery of more than 3 million ounces of gold and the funding for the development of the mine and processing plant to exploit those resources.
Executive: Finance & Administration
Michelle is a Chartered Accountant with over 20 years’ experience in exploration and mining, with an Honours Degree in Geology from the University of the Witwatersrand and Bachelor of Accounting Science (Honours) from the University of South Africa. Michelle has substantial experience working as a geologist prior to joining KPMG’s mining group as a Chartered Accountant. Michelle has held the role of Chief Financial Officer/Financial Director with a number of exploration and mining companies throughout Africa. Michelle provides financial and commercial leadership and with experience in multiple jurisdictions, has been involved in operating resources ventures and has been instrumental in start-ups, corporate acquisitions and disposals. Michelle offers a wealth of knowledge in resource industry risk management and mitigation and strategic leadership. Most recently, Michelle was the CFO of Taurus Gold with gold assets in West Africa. Michelle was also Financial Director of Duration Gold with assets in Zimbabwe as well as director within the Clarity Capital Group, a private investment and advisory services company. Prior to that, Michelle was an executive director of Pangea Exploration.
Louw Van Schalkwyk
Louw obtained a BSc Geology Honours degree at the university of Stellenbosch in 1984. Louw started his career as a geologist in 1986 with Gold Fields of South Africa in the Northern Cape, South Africa. From 1992 to 2007 Louw worked as a contracting geologist and consultant, acting as exploration manager for Anglo American in the Northern Cape from 2000. Between 2008 and 2012, Louw served as technical director on the boards of two junior exploration companies before joining Vendanta Zinc International as Exploration Manager Northern Cape. In 2016, Louw, returned to Geological Consulting, joining the Orion team in May 2017. Louw specialises in structural and exploration geology with a preference to gold and stratabound copper, zinc and lead deposits.
Louw was part of the team that discovered 60 Mt Gamsberg East Zinc Deposit in 2005, which is considered as the highlight of his career. The Gamsberg Project won the runner-up prize in the prestigious Nedbank Green Mining Awards in 2007. Other achievements followed, including the discovery and drill out of the 250,000 oz Byumba Gold deposit in Rwanda in 2008.
Group Corporate Social Responsibility Advisor
Nelson was born and schooled in Kimberley, South Africa and is founder and trustee of the Mosiapoa Family Trust.
The Mosiapoa Family Trust, through its wholly owned subsidiaries, has largely been an investment and private equity company. The assets in which the Trust had initially invested have been in the resources sector and have featured among the top 40 listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.
Nelson started his career at Sasol Petroleum as a gasification process controller and then as a learner official at Anglo American/De Beers, after having studied chemical engineering at Peninsula University of Technology. As an advanced policy scholar of science and technology, Nelson served on the policy unit of the governing party in the Republic of South Africa prior to the first democratic elections.
Commercial & Business Support Manager
Marcus holds a BSc Honours Geology degree from the University of Exeter and a BCom from the University of South Africa. Marcus has over 25 years’ experience in the mining and minerals exploration industry, initially as a geologist in the South African gold mining sector. Marcus subsequently moved into the field of procurement and supply chain with Anglo Gold Ashanti, where he led a team of commodity specialists with responsibility for implementing global sourcing strategies for a diverse portfolio of expenditure. During the last decade, Marcus has fulfilled senior general management roles in the junior exploration sector, with Clarity Minerals and High Power Exploration (HPX), with responsibilities including the establishment and growth of minerals service companies and the management of the logistical aspect of exploration projects across Africa, Australia and South America.
Pottie obtained an MSc Exploration Geology degree at Rhodes University and is registered with the South African Council of Natural Scientific Professionals, a Recognised Overseas Professional Organisation for JORC purposes. He has 17 years of exploration experience with Gold Fields of South Africa and was the Chief Geologist and Mineral Resources Manager for Black Mountain Mining from 1995 until retiring in 2016. During his time at Black Mountain he was part of the feasibility teams responsible for the development of the Broken Hill Deeps Mine and the Gamsberg Zinc Mine. Pottie joined the Orion team in October 2017.
Pieter holds a BCom (Management Accounting) and DipICIMA. Pieter has 15 years’ experience in finance team leadership and management in mining and exploration in widespread jurisdictions including francophone West Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia and South Africa. Pieter has implemented and successfully operated real-time web based financial control systems for companies across the African continent. Pieter has also developed various funding models, successfully applied for fund raising, budgeting and operational control purposes.
Most recently, Pieter has been with Taurus Gold as Group Financial Controller, providing effective leadership within the finance team and management reporting for the Taurus Gold Group with operations in Cote d’lvoire, Burkina Faso and Mali. Prior to that he was the Finance Unit Manager for Evraz Highveld & Vanadium Ltd’s Mapochs Mine and Group Management Accountant for Clarity Capital Group, with gold producing assets in Zimbabwe and exploration projects in Namibia, Zambia and Tanzania.
Pam has a BCom (Accounting) and 15 years’ experience in the finance field. Roles held include Financial Controller, Finance and Admin Manager, Assistant Accountant and Corporate Accountant. Experience in other industries such as industrial hardware and health care, has provided exposure to many aspects of finance which lead to the design and successful implementation of processes that streamlined daily work flow and reporting while connecting work sites within Australia.
